Brogging Asignment 5

The main characters in Old Man and the Sea are Santiago, a fisherman and Manolin, a boy who helps him.


Three adjectives that describe Santiago are... 1. solitary, 2. brave and 3. poor.

That's because "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream." (from Page 9 line 1) is a key sentence. I think fishing alone in a skiff shows that Santiago likes being solitary, and he has a strong brave heart. Generally, most people can't fish alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream without a strong courageous mind, so Santiago is a solitary and brave man. Also, "He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beach." (from Page 25 line 13) is a important statement. I think lions means the symbol of brave and solitary nature. Finally, "His shirt had been patched so many times that it was like the sail." (from Page 18 line 22) shows Santiago is so poor. He can't buy even new clothes.


Three adjectives that describe Manolin are... 1. kind, 2. active and 3. young.

That's because "The boy took the old army blanket off the bed and spread it over the back of the chair and over the old man's shoulders." (from Page 18 line 16) and Manolin said to Santiago "I will bring your sardines" many times. (from Page 12 to 27) shows Manolin's kindness for the old man. Manolin is kind to Santiago, so he did these things. Also, "He walked off, barefooted on the coral rocks, to the ice house where the baits were stored." (from Page 27 line 13) indicates that Manolin is a very active and powerful child. Finally, "I let you carry things when you were five years old." (from Page 27 line 8) says Manolin is so young.
